We have already pointed out the huge amount of Sabans that were living in Saint-Barth during the Swedish periode (1784-1878). Their names keep on showing in the various documents one can look at, HASSELL, SIMMONS, JOHNSON, BEAL, BARNES, EVERY, BEAKS, MARDENBROUGH, WRIGHT, KELLY and so on. But i was surprised to find those 3 lots of documents in the archives of the Swedish Lutherian church « Maria Magdalena » (the only church in Gustavia at the time).

The below documents are showing baptisms on the 13th of June 1819 and on the 04th and the 16th of Novemenber 1821, and, in group as it seems, all those Christened are born in Saba. Was Saba out of priest to handle the baptisms those two years ? We may think so as this doesn’t seem to happen during the previous or following years. But why those were not performed in Statia as before ?

As you can see, the lists comprise of Sabans and also their slaves and many of the witnesses are Sabans installed and living on Saint-Barth already. Guess it also served as families reunions ?
