On the 29th of August 1809, Saint-Barth’s Governor ANKARHEIM is asking for a gathering of the town’s militias. There are 4 militias back then in Gustavia, 2 made of white people and 2 made with colored people. They are due to meet the next day at the battery Gustaf III. It is reminded to the company’s Captains that they must warn their militians: absentees will be fined 4 dollars. This is the militia’s oldest muster roll i have seen so far.
One can spot many Sabans, Statians and even Saint-Martin’s names on the muster roll.

There are many abstentees at the muster, depsite the threat of a steep fine, but at least one had an excuse, a certain Ralph JOHNSON from the 1st white company.
