The « thank-you letter » written by the town’s newly emancipated men

On the 9th of October 1847, the day slavery was abolished on Saint-Barth, some of the newly emancipated men wrote a letter to the island’s Governor James Haarlef HAASUM to thank him  » for the freedom purchased for us « .

This is a very touching document, one has difficulty to understand it could ever be written.

FSB 286 – 1st page of the letter written by the freed slaves from the town of Gustavia
FSB 286 – 2d page of the letter written by the freed slaves from the town of Gustavia
FSB 286 – 3rd page of the letter written by the freed slaves from the town of Gustavia

They were slaves, and are now free men, most of those twenty-two that signed the letter have descendants today, living here or elsewhere.
